Last week I had the honour of meeting Ryan Bednar, one of my new favourite Japan YouTubers. Ryan is living in a van and travelling Japan making some really cool videos along the way!
Here’s his video on Yamagata:
I had written an article for you, however, while fact checking I found a few too many inconsistencies that I want to make right before sending anything out.
In the meantime,
I hope you’ll enjoy a few photos from winter up here in Yamagata.
The Otorii shrine gates to Dewa Sanzan Jinja and Gas-san (Mt. Gassan). It looks like the road there is heading towards the Otorii, but it’s not! That’s why they’re at an odd angle.
Same gates, different angle.
Completely different gates and different snow as well. You can tell that people visit this shrine even in the middle of winter.
This might just be my favourite shrine. Bonus Chokai-san.
This train used to serve Zenpoji Temple in Tsuruoka. And then they kind of just left it here.
Lastly, contrary to what it would seem, we also had an 80-year-old homophobe from Fukushima running for the prefectural governor position. Yoshimura won it though with the lowest turnout in forever and for something like the fifth time in a row, a first for a female in Japan apparently. Gotta love the pose too!
