I want to be up there
And Daily Yamabushi posts for February 20 to 26, 2026.
I’m rebuilding Timbunting.com. It’s a very slow process. I wish I could prioritise it more, but alas I can’t. Anyway, I’ve decided to split my mountains posts into stories and hiking guides, and in the process I’ve been looking back at photos of the mountains of Yamagata.
To be honest, I’m constantly reminded of their beauty. I mean, I see them every day. I can see Chokai (which also means Shoga-dake) from my bedroom window, Gassan from my office window, and a short stroll away I can see Taizo and Kyogakura, two mountains I would not have known about if I hadn’t started this project.
Anyway, all I can think about when I see them is “I want to be up there”. I want to be among their beauty. I want to take in all they have to offer. Which to be honest, is a lot, as anyone who has followed the project to date would know.
Take Hokari-yama for example. Mother. Hunter. Mountain.
Awesome name.
Weird backstory.
Sheer beauty.

A reminder: this is but one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Yamagata. I look forward to sharing more!
