Kia ora Mark. Thanks for the question! Not exactly. There's this white plastic stuff with little spikes that kids use to practice skiing on in the summer!
People seem to think only Hokkaido gets snow, if only that were true! I kid, I love the snow. Yamagata‘s is some of the finest. Couldn’t imagine skiing in Kyushu. Although I assume it’s like NZ. Plenty of snow on the mountains. Do they do it on Hiko-san?
Yes, I have been skiing in Tohoku many times and certainly appreciate the amazing snow and sulfur hot springs! Down here we have been to this place once, but there was only one run open that had been supplied with artificial snow: https://www.kujyuski.co.jp/
Junko Tabei <3 There is sadly so little published about her in English, though, "Honouring High Places: The Mountain Life of Junko Tabei" (2017) is a treasure.
My review of "Honouring High Places" on GoodReads!
Oh thanks!! I was looking for something in English but was disappointed to find there wasn’t much. Will be sure to give this a read. My friend had said it was one of the best life stories they had ever read!
Interesting stories! I am curious about the term "summer ski field." Is this a place to go grass skiing?

Thanks for the quick response. I am not familiar with what you have described. As I live down in Kyushu, we don't have much skiing, in general.

Tohoku really is the best! (Although I haven't been to Hokkaido yet...)

The book has its issues, but hers really is such an important story. You might have to order it via the US but its a strong recommend from me, Tim!
