Interesting article title. The history up here always fascinates me. Indeed, the rebellious and independent nature of the region passed down through generations is what makes it special. The winners (Kyoto) had written its history, but I sometimes think the “barbarians” actually influenced Japanese culture more than we actually know or even understand.
